One of the fundamental elements of design is shape, and for good reason. A lot can be accomplished with the use of specific shapes. Whether harnessing an existing interpretation or playing with shapes to tell a different story, simple angles and curves can be used to your advantage. Here are a few examples of how:

There are endless amounts of shapes and curves for us to play with as designers. It’s unavoidable and part of our job to incorporate these shapes and angles. For years, I would find myself working on a project where a guide of a specific shape would help me out. I found myself manually making these with the pen tool, but it was annoying when I couldn’t turn the guide on or off. There had to be an easier way! I did some digging and found the solution, so I’d like to share it with you in this tutorial!

Think about your favorite brands or iconic companies that stick out to you for a moment. What are some of the first things that come to mind? Maybe it’s their logo, tagline, brand colors, or brand message. Do you think of an advertisement or creative concept made famous by this brand? A jingle? Or maybe your first thought is your feelings toward the brand, whether it is positive or negative. Regardless of what came to mind, these are all things that make a brand who they are. Every piece is a foundation of their unique brand story.

At Zipie, our days are focused around one thing: our clients. We are radically committed to each and every one of our clients and are constantly working hard to do our best for them. Some days we can get so caught up in working on the next thing that we forget to sit back and soak in the awesomeness of their brands. As a result, we decided to start a client spotlight series that highlights some of the spectacular things our clients are doing. Our first client is Ford Motor Company.

In our world, design is everywhere. It’s ingrained in our everyday life and we may often overlook it. A specific area of design that gets taken for granted is typography. At its core, typography is the way that letters are designed and arranged. Before studying design, I didn’t realize that someone had to actually sit down and create the letters. This process includes making decisions on the overall look of each letter and their relationship with one another. Beyond just individual letters, the spacing between the letters and each line of type has to be defined.

We’ve been designing, and you’ve been deciding. The graphic designers themselves weigh in with their reactions about which of their logos received the most votes while taking us behind the scenes of their design process.
Think about some of the biggest brands you know. Ford. Ikea. McDonald’s. Chances are, even with this small mention of these giant corporations, you know exactly what their branding is all about. Ford’s logo is blue and circular. Ikea’s is yellow and blocky. McDonald’s is, well, the golden arches. These corporations and companies have done their jobs well in creating memorable experiences for customers and allows your customers to know what to expect from their products and services. The good news? You can do it, too!
