What We're Reading This Month

Written by Zipie | Apr 20, 2020 7:29:40 PM

At Zipie, our love for books runs deep whether we’re reading to expand our professional knowledge or escape into the world of Hogwarts. Our team pulled together a list of book recommendations to dive into this month.

Makenzie, Account Executive

  • Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng: This is one of those books that you won’t want to put down! Quick, fun read and when you finish it, you can binge watch the new Hulu series based on the book!
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie: Must read for all professions! This book is chock-full of valuable tips and tricks to succeed in your career and life

Bailey, Inbound Marketing Manager

  • Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead: What Every Business Can Learn from the Most Iconic Band in History by David Meerman Scott and Brian Halligan: I love this book because it combines two of my favorite things, inbound marketing and the Grateful Dead! Also, it was written by the co-founder of HubSpot, Brian Halligan. Even if you aren’t a fan of the music group, this book includes invaluable lessons that can be learned and practiced by any business.
  • The Primates of Park Avenue by Wednesday Martin: I picked up this book in an airport once and I’m so glad I did! It follows an anthropologist’s interesting (and real) journey into her life as a new upper east sider in New York City. Spoiler alert: Despite her initial reluctance, she ends up spending $30,000 on a Hermes bag to fit in with the rest of the moms in the neighborhood. And that might be one of the less shocking parts of the book.

Claire, Graphic Designer

  • Hidden Persuaders by Vance Packard: If you like learning about the psychology of marketing, this is a top choice. Packard talks about why people think the way they do, buy certain things, and the reasoning behind that. My favorite line in this book is “people do not act rationally….but they do act with reason”. This book also explains how people don't know what they want until you tell them. It contains great lessons and insights to marketers of all types.
  • The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald: Do I even need to explain why I picked this book? What a classic. The Great Gatsby has been a favorite of mine since the first time it was taught in class. If you haven't read it by now, you must. It’s pretty short, and a page-turner. The mysterious love affection between Gatsby and Daisy is a thrill and makes me want to time travel back into the twenties to hit up a Gatsby party. Gatsby tries to track his long lost love, Daisy, down by throwing extremely lavish parties. There's love, lust, and heartbreak. Heck, I might even go read it again now.

Porchia, Account Coordinator

  • Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon: This book will touch on every single emotion, but leave you completely attached to the main character. Everything Everything is unique and unlike any other book from the storytelling to the art the author shares with you throughout the pages. It’s a light read but there’s power behind the message. Bonus, it’s in the works to become a movie too!
  • Atomic Habits by James Clear: A toolkit that will change your life. The author offers practical strategies for building positive habits and stresses the importance of focusing on small improvements to produce big results. No matter your profession, this book is a life-changing resource that anyone can instantly apply to their life. You will not be disappointed. “Success is the product of daily habits - not once-in-a-lifetime transformations.”

Caleb, Graphic Designer

  • The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman: This book explores fundamental elements of product, interaction, and user experience design by breaking down and reevaluating the way we interact with everyday items. Great insights for designers.
  • Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman: A really fun read, crammed with unique characters and humor. Great introduction to both Terry Pratchett, who wrote the hilarious Discworld series, and Neil Gaiman, who wrote Small Gods. And if you don’t want to read it, they’ve made it into a limited series on Amazon!

Nicole, Administrative Director

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling:This is my comfort book. For those days you want to soak in a hot bath, or curl up on the couch with a large bowl of mac and cheese. For me, this book is my comfort. It’s genuinely encouraging, fun, and takes me back to a time of carefree innocence. I love J.K. Rowling’s style of writing and her character and story development. This book always makes me excited for the next adventure. Plus, who doesn’t love a little magic?
  • Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice The Work in Half the Time by Jeff Sutherland: A key factor in the success of any business is based on the productivity and commitment from its team members. The scrum methodology is a new approach to project management that helps identify how to complete a project efficiently and on budget.

Nate, President

  • New Power by Jeremy Heimans and Henry Timms: A fantastic book demonstrating the differences between “old power” (power treated as currency) and “new power” (power treated as electric current) and how not just technology but especially behavior and expectations have changed to enable new power. A great read for anyone, but especially brands to understand influence and the power of movements.
  • East of the Mountains by David Guterson: A “coming of age” story for a person who is near the end of their life. By the author of Snow Falling On Cedars, this book is only “fun” in that it is fantastic literature with beautiful descriptions of the pacific northwest. One of my favorite books.

Tatiana, VP of Operations

  • The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra: This is not a fiction but spiritual philosophy read which will help you to navigate through your life with more ease and flow. Short read and to have on your night table to refer back periodically. Life is changing, so do you and your interpretation of what you are reading.
  • How to Have a Good Day by Caroline Webb: It will give you practical tools on how to navigate through those days when you want to crawl under the table and cry :)
